25 Ultimate Guide: How To Get Rid of Eye Bags (Updated)

When we talk about ways to get rid of eye bags, I’m sure you’ve seen enough of different methods to tackle this same problem of eye bags. It’s REALLY difficult to remove eye bags completely and these under eye bags seemed to be sagging more and more as you aged.

Basically, these 25 methods can be categorized into 4 PARTS:

  • Natural Home Remedies
  • Proper Lifestyle Guidance
  • Cosmetic Solutions
  • Alternative Holistic Regimens

Here’s a list of guide that actually works…

Part 1: Check Out These Actionable Natural Home Remedies to Combat Eye Bags FAST!

1. Use cucumber slices for instant effect

This method is temporary but it is the cheapest way. How does it work?

The science behind…

A slice of chilled cucumber contains 95% of water that moisturizes your skin and at the same time rejuvenates dead skin and shrinking pores around under eye area.

But here’s the kicker,

Chilled cucumber slice gives out cooling effect, helps constrict under eye blood vessels & temporary… Click To Tweet
“Cucumbers have powerful antioxidants and flavinoids that are thought to reduce irritation. And they need to be chilled for a reason, as he points out that “cold cucumbers or tea bags also work in part by the cooling effects of evaporation, and are best applied for four to five minutes.” says  Dr. Gregory Nikolaidis, an Austin-based dermatologist.

Also, do not forget cucumber consists of ascorbic acid and caffeine that helps in reducing under eye water retention fast. The anti-inflammation and astringent properties in cucumbers also work on reducing irritation and at the same time tighten the skin.

Another plus point … it’s richness in Vitamin E and potassium is effective in eliminating any blemishes on your skin.

2. Sliced potatoes for under-eye bags removal and dark circles lightening

This is another method similar as how cucumber slices worked. It is cheap but only tone down under-eye bags temporarily.

Potato is RICH in starch content. So this is how the magic works…

The starch content in potatoes has anti-inflammatory properties that help reduce under-eye bags. Enzymes with natural bleaching properties found in potato also help to lighten dark circles under eyes.

3. Recycle used tea bags in a much benefiting way

I had tried using green tea bags and black tea bags, both give the same effect. It works to get rid of eye bags temporary and it’s a good way of recycling the used tea bags.

The residue tea leaves contain Tannins with astringent properties which act as anti-irritant. It soothes puffy and irritated eyes as well as reduces under-eye swelling. That is why tea leaves works so EFFECTIVELY in relieving redness and minor eye inflammation.

Just one reminder: black tea bags may temporary stained on your skin so it’s better to use green tea bags.

4. Milky treatment to resolve eye bags problem

This method is not only great for getting rid of eye bags but also good for sore eyes or dark circles. It is another economic way of combating under-eye bags.

Whole milk works most effectively compared to low fat or skim milk. Why?

The rich content of lactic acid in milk is the KEY for resolving eye bags problem. Chilled whole milk is most commonly use as it gives cooling effects and soothe tired eyes. At the same time it reduces water retention of the tissues under eyes.

Here’s a tip! Add sprinkles of turmeric powder into chilled milk will give better effect on reducing eye bags, lessens inflammation and lightening dark circles.

5. How Egg Whites as a skin tightening agent helps reduce bags under eye

Egg whites are RICH in collagen protein work well to banish under-eye bags but again, the effect is short-lived.

Some other plus points using egg whites:

  • Improved bad blood circulation and astringent effect that is great for toning the skin and help reduce wrinkles. Besides, it also reduces inflammation.
  • Skin-tightening properties of egg whites gives mild tension on the skin surface as it dries slowly.

Here’s my suggestion: avoid too much of movement at your under-eye area when applying egg whites.

6. Moisturized your under eye with Aloe Vera

I have got aloe vera planted in my garden so I’d decided to give it a try.

Here’s what I found out:

The under eye skin feels smoother and the tightening sensation around the area actually gives a slight LIFT on the lower eyelid instantly. Aloe vera works well in reducing eye bags and gives an instant moisturize effect on the skin.

As we all know aloe vera is rich in antioxidants and vitamin E. These 2 KEY ingredients work effectively in reducing puffy eyes and keeping wrinkles and fine lines at bay.

Aloe Vera also helps improve blood circulation and flush out excessive fluids around the eyes which is another effective under eye bags treatment.

Important reminders:

  • Use only the transparent gel and avoid the yellow sap at the outer layer as it contains Aloin, a substance that will irritate the skin.
  • Be very careful when applying it to avoid any aloe vera sap getting into your eyes.

If you do not have an aloe vera plant at home, any skin care products that contain aloe vera gel or extracts will do as well.

7. Cold metal spoon for instant de-puffiness

I personally find that cold compress using metal spoon is as good as using an instant eye pack. You can expect to see quick results and I do recommend to give it a try if you want to get rid of eye bags fast.

If you are wondering how it works, here’s why…

“Technically, cold temperature can cause blood vessels to constrict, so swelling is temporarily reduced,” says Phillip Artemi of the Australasian College of Dermatologists.

This simple method constricts the blood vessels around the under-eye area and thus reduces puffiness. It is no surprise to find that chilled spoon works well to ease puffiness and relieves tired eyes!

8. Warm water with salt removes under-eye fluid retention

Obviously, salt in the warm water here plays the main role of reducing puffiness or swelling at your under eye.

How did it work?

The salt water helps to remove fluid retention under the eyes slowly through a way similar to osmosis process.

9. Rinse your face with cold water to eliminate under-eye swelling

Guess what, this is the easiest way of all the 25 methods.

Although this method uses the same cooling effect to help constrict blood vessels, I found it less effective comparing to using cold metal spoon. Still, this is the easiest way if your puffy eyes are caused by sleepless night or insomnia.

Let’s move on to the 2nd part of combating eye bags: the long-term strategies…

Part 2: Guidance On How Changing Certain Habits In Life Helps Removing Eye Bags EFFECTIVELY!

 10. Your beauty sleep helps a lot more than you think

Do you know it is scientifically PROVEN that insufficient sleep or inconsistent sleeping habit can cause under-eye bags? And it comes with other free gifts like dark circle, wrinkles and acne all slapping on your face!

“Getting more sleep may reduce redness in the eyes and the fullness of eye bags, but it will do little to eliminate dark pigment,” says Dr. Phillip Artemi.

If you are in a bad sleeping habit, it’s time to do something about it. STOP staying up late watching late night shows into the wee small hours.

Other wise, no matter how many eye care treatment you had, it just won’t work and if it works, it will not last!

Trust me, quit your late night habits and let all things work together for good; you’ll see a real difference.

After all, everyone deserves their very own beauty sleep. Agree?

11. Proper sleeping position helps prevent fluid retention under your eyes

Secret revealed!

Switch your sleep position. Sleep position can be contributing to under-eye bags through gravity. Sleeping on your side or stomach can encourage fluids to collect under your eyes. If you’re a side sleeper, you may notice a heavier bag on the side you sleep on.

Sleep with your head angled slightly downward will prevent fluid retention under your eyes at night. You will definitely find your eye bags reduced overnight!

It is actually a reverse gravity technique and is useful in reducing eye bags as fluid retention is less likely to occur. I know it might not be easy to change your sleep positions.

In fact, it’s difficult to adapt at first but this is the least we can do for the sake of beauty.

Here’s a tip to better adjust your sleeping position…

… Simply pad another pillow underneath your head when sleeping on your back.

12. Avoid Drinking Water Before You Sleep

I have to confess: I have this bad habit of drinking water before going to bed.

After cutting down water intake before bed, I soon realized a SIGNIFICANT improvement on puffy eyes especially early in the morning!

13. How spending long hours in front of screens leads to eye bags

Tiredness is a MAJOR culprit of eye bags!

Avoid starring too long at the screen of your electrical device be it computer, laptop, mobile or ipad. QUIT the habit of sitting for long hours in front of television and computers without giving our eyes a rest.

This will overwork our eye muscles and by the time we realized it’s the time when the big under-eye bags pop out.

My sincere piece of advice:

  • Limit the hours you spend in front of screens.
  • Pause every 20 mins on what you are doing and look away from the screens.

I think this mini gap in between is a good way to have at least a few seconds or minutes for your eye to rest.

14. Take your Allergy under control

Nasal allergies and sinuses can cause watery, puffy eyes. I personally would try to avoid taking medicine since my allergy is not too serious but bear in mind this is different from case to case.

So how do I treat my allergy?

My only way of tackle is… Try preventing the onset of it.

This includes limiting myself from the exposure of allergens that I know would trigger allergy like pollen, feather pillow, dust etc. What if the situation doesn’t allow you to avoid it, for instance clearing off a dusty area?

Here’s some tips…

Cover your nose and mouth with your hand or simply wear a mask to minimize the exposure.

Although it is not 100% preventive, at least my condition wouldn’t go worst & my puffy eyes would gradually subside.

To be on the safe side, consult a doctor whenever it’s necessary.

15. Quit smoking helps prevent bags under eyes

Do you know smoking can cause one to age faster?

It is proven by research:

Smoking can leads to dry and weaken skin on your face. Click To Tweet

Insufficient hydration of skin is the common cause for bags under eyes.

I guess you do not need any better reason to quit smoking to save yourself from wrinkled, droopy eyes.

16. Revitalize with plenty of water

I wonder if you realized one tends to wake up with bags under eyes after crying the night before.

It is due to salt in the body draws water and accumulates under the eyes which cause eye bags.

Chances of water retention will be LESS when the body is well hydrated. Click To Tweet

This explains why dehydration causes sagging.

Drink at least 2 liter of water a day which is essential in hydration and revitalizes your skin. At the same time, drinking plenty water can help to flush excess salt from your system.

17. Treat your face with tender, love & care

The golden rule of thumb, you should NEVER sleep with you makeup on!

Avoid rubbing eyes frequently, going to bed with makeup on, and harsh cleansers. Anything that irritates the eyes can cause fluids to pool. Sleeping in eye makeup can irritate eyes, causing undereye edema.

The chemical content in cosmetic products can actually lead to aging especially thin and frail skin like the under-eye area thus sagging eye bag appears.

It is essential to remove your makeup and clean your face thoroughly; making sure that there is no residue left.

Check-out the tips of cleaning your face properly.

Dry your skin with soft towel and avoid rubbing your face harsh as it may weaken the skin around your eyes.

Some important points:

  • AVOID excessive exposure of sun’s UV light.
  • ALWAYS apply sunscreen when outdoor.
  • PUT on a hat and shades if necessary during outdoor activities.
  • AVOID touching or rubbing your eyes too often as the tissue around the eyes area are sensitive and frail.

Don’t neglect on these simple steps, they help to protect your skin from early aging which leads to sagging bags under eyes.

18. How diet affect your appearance

One of the culprits that cause bags under eyes is salt. Curb the salt in your daily diet will help lessen the chances of water retention and help reduce swelling around the eyes area.

BEWARE! Your diet might be high in sodium if instant or processed food like bacon, sausage and ham are part of your daily diet.

” If you suddenly notice under-eye bags, examine your diet carefully to determine whether you’ve been consuming more sodium than usual. Also keep in mind that when the sodium and potassium balance in your body is upset, it can cause under-eye circles, according to authors Gareth Zeal and Hazel Courteney in “500 Health Tips.”

Other than salt, alcohol and caffeinated drinks should be cut down to the least. Taking in too much of these drinks with less water consumed at the same time will lead to dehydration. As a respond to it the body will store up more fluid. You can expect a huge, puffy under-eye bags waiting the next day when you woke up.

IMAGINE the impact when a high sodium content diet paired with alcohol and caffeinated drinks… A TOTAL disaster of  long-term under eye bags and puffy eyes!

The reason is…

Water retention under the eyes area for a prolonged period will cause delicate tissues under the eyes area to be stretched out permanently. Skin under the eyes will sink into a pouch after losing its flexibility.

Get rid of eye bags with healthy diet

Since you’ve known what to cut out from your diet, what’s next?

Here’s what you should add into your diet to ensure a BALANCE nutrition and of course help better in reducing eye bags.

According to Hollywood nutritionist Kimberly Snyder, eating a banana a day keeps the eye bags away. She explains that they are high in potassium, which helps to regulate the fluid levels under the eyes.

Acupuncture is a common practice in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). During the treatment, ultra-fine needles are placed on acupuncture points to increase circulation of skin and clear out toxins around the eyes area.

get rid of eye bags with acupuncture

If you wonder how successful is facial acupuncture…

According to a study published in the International Journal of Clinical Acupuncture,Out of 300 people who experienced facial acupuncture, over 80% saw improvement after just one course of treatment.

Success of facial acupuncture as an alternative to Botox, plastic surgery and chemical peels also has been featured in magazines such as Health, American Spa, Town & Country, and New York Magazine.

Since this treatment requires a certain level of skills, it is mandatory to have your facial acupuncture performed under qualified practitioner.

24. Acupressure Facial Massage

I believe not many have heard of acupressure. It is based on a Chinese healing technique that stimulates energy flow (known as Qi) through “meridians”, an invisible pathway in the body.

Unlike Acupuncture, acupressure does not involve any usage of needles. As whats its called, this method is much simpler. All you need to do is simply massage or apply pressure with the pad of your finger (not fingertip) on the acupuncture points.

So, you might be thinking how this works to reduce eye bags… Acupressure helps to clear blockage of meridians, boosts circulation and relaxes facial muscles. You will find bags under eye dissipate slowly as the congestion is cleared and circulation is improved.

According to Dr.Zhu, former president of the Canadian College of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine,

Acupressure massage is good for any stage of the problem, but acupuncture is only good for early stages of baggy eyes.

25. Yoga For Eyes!

Do you know you can eliminate your puffy eyes by exercising your eyes? The reason behind is exercise helps to relax eye muscles, improve circulation and diminish stress and tiredness.
